Recently Apple released his new generation smartphone series, iPhone 12 series. For this generation of
smartphones, Apple is using a new generation processor the Apple A14 bionic chipset. According to
Apple, this is the future of chipset and it is better than their previous chipset A13 and also better than
Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus. Also Apple clams that it is better than any other smartphone
processor. The A14 bionic processor is a TSMC’s cutting edge 5nm design and its performance is better
than the latest processor with 7nm design & as we all Know Apple vs Android is here since the begining.
The key feature is that it contains 11.8 Billion transistors, 70% faster ML accelerator, 50% faster CPU
(than any other smartphone) and also improved memory compression. It can also perform 11 trillion
operations per second on neutral engine. Apple sticks with a hexa-core 2+4 big. LITTLE CPU architecture
design, but switches over to new “Firestorm” and “Icestorm” cores.

A14 bionic and A13 bionic chipset.
Now let’s talk about the comparison between the A14 bionic and A13 bionic chipset. In A14 Apple sticks
with a 4-core GPU cluster, built entirely in-house. This looks almost the same as the A13. The 11.8 billion
transistors in A14 are 38% increase over the A13’s 8.5 billion transistors, also improvement to the 16-
core neural engine for AI workloads and image processing. Apple boasts 11TOPs of AI inferencing
performance, up from 6TOPs in the A13. Also in this series of smartphone Apple introduces 5G. Apple
has paired the chip up with a Snapdragon X55 4G and 5G dual-mode modem instead of an integrated 5G
modem. This includes mm Wave and sub-6GHz support, 5G FDD, 4G/5G spectrum shoreline and support
for future proof standalone 5G networks. The modem’s speeds cap out at 7Gbps on mm Wave
Apple A14 benchmark
Let’s talk about the result of Benchmark of A14 and A13 bionic chip. If we talk about the single thread
performance, the A14 chip was 21% better at performance than A13 chip. While in multi-cure
performance, the A14 chip was 17% better at performance than A13 chip. The improve in the
performance is due to the change in “Lightning” and “Thunder” CPUs to the new “Firestorm” and
“Icestorm” big and little microarchitecture.
